John Mayer has always been something of an old soul when it comes to music. He has shown it by teaming up with blues legends like B.B. King, and he proves it once again on his newest release, Born and Raised, the follow-up to 2009's Battle Studies.

Released on Tuesday (May 22), Born and Raised finds the 34-year-old reflecting on adulthood and putting his "Shadow Days" behind him ("It's nice to make some love that I can finally feel," he sings on the track). While Mayer hasn't completely let go of his lady-killer image, as when he's yearning over another man's girl on "Something Like Olivia," he spends more time expressing regret over unfulfilled dreams and what it means to be an adult.

Last week MTV News sat in on an album listening session at New York's Electric Lady Studios, where Mayer told the room, "If you're lucky, you get to make giant evolutionary steps from your first record." We've highlighted five key tracks from the LP below, and we'll let you decide if the singer/songwriter made those giant steps.

"Born and Raised": The album's title track seems to sum up where John is these days. With harmonica and guitar backing him, he admits, "Now and then, I pace my place/ I can't retrace how I got here/ I cheat the light/ To check my face/ It's slightly harder than last year." Later he says, "Then all at once/ It gets hard to take/ It gets hard to fake what I won't be/ 'Cause one of these days/ I'll be born and raised/ And it's such a waste to grow up lonely." Mayer even addresses the heartbreak of his parents' 2009 divorce, singing, "I still got faith/ I call on both of my brothers/ I got a mom, I got a dad/ But they do not have each other."

On "If I Ever Get Around to Living," Mayer picks up where "Born and Raised" leaves off, giving fans a glimpse of pre-celebrity life in Connecticut. He wonders whether the fame and success is even real: "Maybe it's all a dream I'm having at 17/ I don't have tattoos/ And very soon mother will be calling me saying, 'Come upstairs, you got some work to do.' " In the end, he shakes off the fantasy, telling himself, "I think you better wise up, boy." He repeats that line over and over like a mantra.

Fans who are worried that the sexy Mayer of songs like 2003's "Come Back to Bed" doesn't make an appearance will be happy to hear "Love Is a Verb," a track full of longing. "So you gotta show me/ That love is a verb," he pleads. Simple and straightforward, Mayer reminds us that love is something you do, not just a word you say.

For "Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey," Mayer takes us to his occasional home of New York City, where he's "trying to find the man I never got to be." As the title suggests, the country-tinged song is all about drowning your sorrows in late nights and lots of whiskey, going to sleep and then waking up to do it all over again. And though Mayer knows that routine won't get him anywhere, he's just trying to get to a place where he can feel again.

The album takes another turn for the romantic near the end. "You know my paper heart/ The one I filled with pencil/ I think I might have gone and inked you in," he sings on "A Face to Call Home." Sure, the album is full of 30-something reflection, but Mayer can still craft a smart love song, and he's at his best on songs like this one.

Rebecca Blake: Swinging in Dubai PHOTOS

Rebecca Blake has earned quite the Internet name for herself after being accuses of having relations in a taxi in Dubai. So what’s the big deal, and why is this news? Well, because being caught doing something like that in Dubai is a pretty big deal. In fact, Blake could be facing up to three years in jail. Even with plans for the most futuristic hotel in the world (above), they apparently have old fashioned views. What are the actual charges? Well, so far, they are related to being drunk in public and having sex outside of marriage. Don’t you just love how the government cares about your sex life over there? Not only do they care, but they feel the need to lock people up for it. It’s unbelievable. Blake is a British businesswoman who works as a consultant. She happened to be in Dubai at a bar called The Irish Village Bar where she allegedly met a man named Conor McRedmond. According to reports, they must have both had their beer-goggles on because they were soon jumping into a cab and playing tonsil hockey. The cabby was already upset that they were kissing, which is ridiculous enough. But [...]

Justin Bieber Is Big Floyd Mayweather Fan, 50 Cent Says

Rapper tells MTV News about being at Mayweather's match against Miguel Cotto with the Biebs and Lil Wayne.
By Rob Markman

<P>Everyone loves a champion, and currently there is no bigger boxing champ than Floyd "Money" Mayweather. Not only did the outspoken pugilist attract a record number of pay-per-view fans for his May 5 match against Miguel Cotto, he also brought music's brightest stars to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on fight night. Of course 50 Cent was on hand to cheer on his buddy Floyd, and Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne made their way to the ring as well.</P><P>Many fight fans were surprised to see that the Biebs had been in Mayweather's dressing room for the fight preparations; after that, JB walked with the undefeated Floyd to the ring, helping to hold the champ's belts.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Boxing Brought Together 50 Cent, Justin Bieber And Lil Wayne" id="vid:769373" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"Justin is also a Floyd fan. They love the sport. A lot of people like it and haven't actually made contact or received anything to make them feel like it was cool or comfortable enough for them to come," 50 said about JB's much-discussed ring walk. "When it actually happens and it goes down like that, it feels good. When they get a chance to see different genres, different people, everybody's excited."</P><P>One of the more excited fans was Floyd's daughter Iyanna, who, according to 50, was fixated on the teenage idol. "Floyd's daughter, Yaya, she saw half the fight, the other half she was looking at Bieber," the rapper joked. "He just got that thing for the younger generation, too &#8212; he's it."</P><P>Some were also surprised to see Lil Wayne in the ring. In the past, he and 50 haven't been the best of friends, so many assumed that Floyd would inherit Fif's perceived rap beefs, but that isn't the case. In fact, Mayweather is a Weezy fan; he listens to his music constantly while training.</P><P>"Floyd has a huge passion for music that people don't know about," 50 explained. "It's a big part of what makes him comfortable and takes his mind off of how hard he has to work to stay being the #1 fighter in the world. With Wayne's music momentum, he's a part of that; he's been a part of the playlist, so it's cool."</P><P>After Floyd dusted off Cotto in a unanimous decision, he, Bieber, Weezy and 50 all celebrated in the ring and even posed for a few pictures. Though Fif sported his patented menacing scowl, he insists that there was no problem whatsoever. "The pictures, when I'm not paying attention, they take some really weird facial expressions of me," he said. "I'm like, 'What the f--- was I thinking at that point?' It's nothing there to make me feel uncomfortable."</P><P><i>Should Justin Bieber join Floyd Mayweather's Money Team? Celebrity Breakups: Heidi Klum & Seal Divorce

Heidi Klum and Seal

They've shared one of the most passionate unions in Tinseltown, so it comes as sad and surprising news that Heidi Klum is getting divorced from husband Seal. Seal was the special guest during Monday's (January 23) taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show". With the episode set to air later this week, the 48-year-old British singer opened up about ending his marriage with wife of six and a half years, Heidi Klum, telling, “I think we were shocked. You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say ‘I do’ and you say ’til death do us part.’ Those vows hold value. They are not just words… You try and you work through it and the thing that you quickly realize when you are married and you become a parent you do the best that you can." "It makes you actually appreciate your parents a lot more. The thing that I’m most proud about this great woman who married (and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart), is that together she has given me four incredible gifts…four beautiful children [Leni, Henry, Johan, and Lou]. She still, in my opinion, the most wonderful woman in the world. I think our priority was to remain civil and do this thing with dignity. We still very much love each other,” Seal, who also performed “Let’s Stay Together” for the daytime talk show, added. “To say that neither of us were grieving would be an out and out lie (and I don’t mind telling you that). I think the operative here is that we are civil to each other and we both have a tremendous amount of respect and love and we try and do this with as much dignity as we possibly can.” Meanwhile, the "Kiss From a Rose" singer also commented on the fact that he was still sporting his wedding band, as he explained, “Yes, I am still wearing my ring. I think it’s just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman. We have eight years. Eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn’t necessarily mean you take off your ring and you’re no longer connected to that person. We will be connected in many ways ‘til the rest of our lives…. though our children and also through this tremendous admiration, respect and love that we have for each other. Will we wear the ring for the rest of our lives? Who knows? But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand so I have intentions of taking it off anytime soon.” [gallery=811]Heidi Klum and Seal

Michael Jackson Doctor Can't Afford Lawyer For Appeal

Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>Just weeks after being sent to jail for four years following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Michael Jackson, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court.</P><P>The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday E! News reported that Murray filed a notice of appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal."</P><P>Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail.</P><P>"It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender.</P><P>Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the Associated Press that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail.</P><P>"Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.</p>
